“So there was no point at all during the entire date that he stood up and screamed for the whole restaurant to hear?” Vicki asked me.

“Nope.”

“Oh, no.” She gasped. “You’re telling me this guy actually paid attention to you, talked to you, and—and acted completely normal?”

“Yep.”

“Didn’t throw anything? Didn’t moon the waitress?”

“Nope.” I laughed. “Not even once.”

“Well, damn, Nate.” She shook her head. “He sounds boring.”

“Shut up.” I laughed and gave her a shove. “He’s perfect.”

“Know that already, do you?”

“Yeah, Vick,” I said. “I’m an expert, remember?”

“I remember.”

Cha-clunk.

I stapled yet another set of streamers to the wall of the store, and then a Cupid-baby on top.

“Nate, that looks like crap,” Vicki said to me. “It’s like the baby has a tail.”

“Oh, who really cares?” I laughed. “As long as everything goes up, we’re good.”

“You know we have four more of these babies to put up, right?” she said. “Like, we have to find four other spots in this store. We already did this once before. Why do we have to do it again?”

“I think the head office didn’t like how they looked, or something.”

“Obviously.” Vicki rolled her eyes. “They’re so dumb. How could anyone like how they look?”

“I dunno.” I frowned, examining one of the babies. “They’re kind of cute, once you look at them long enough.”

“Okay, gross.” She yanked the Cupid from my hand. “You are being gross right now.”

“They’re not that bad, Vick.”

“Uh—yes, they are.”

“No, they’re not,” I said, pulling the baby back from her. “They’ve got chubby little faces, and cute little wings…”

“Barf,” she said, holding streamers up to her mouth. “Look, you’re making me barf!” She started to shake the streamers.

I started to laugh, and Vicki did as well, but we stopped once we heard a very loud, very disgusting throat-clearing sound come from a few aisles over.

“I guess Sandra isn’t feeling the joy today,” Vicki said knowingly.

I laughed again. “No, I guess not.”

“Maybe she’s the one that needs to get laid.”

“Vicki!” I gasped. “I did not sleep with him last night!”

“Oh, really?” She raised her eyebrows. “Mr. Romance didn’t want any romance?”

“Sex isn’t romance,” I pointed out.

“Okay, so what’s your idea of romance, then?”

“Umm…” I pointed just behind her. “That.”

Vicki spun around, and I heard her gasp. “Is that—oh, my God. Is that him?”

It definitely was.

Jacob was walking into my store with a gigantic floral arrangement. I could see the bright colors of the mixed bouquet from across the room. The only flowers I knew by name that I could make out from where I was were the lilies, but they were definitely the most beautiful lilies I’d ever seen.

Heads turned as he walked… but I wasn’t sure if people were looking at him, or at the flowers.

He reached the front counter, where I usually stood, and put the flowers down.

“Come on,” Vicki hissed at me. “Come on, Nate!”

I was frozen in place. It was like all I could do was stare helplessly ahead.

Can guys really do that? I found myself asking again. Can guys really buy flowers for each other?

Well, I suppose they can… because Jacob did.
